Inviting an escort to your room

Officially, visitors are not allowed to stay in your hotel room late at night or overnight without registering at the front desk — something escorts avoid, since a girl registered at a series of hotels with different guests would be flagging her line of work to a police database. In practice, Shanghai hotel staff pay little attention to this rule, provided you are not staying in a cheap local hotel. Western-oriented five-star hotels have caused their guests essentially no problems in recent years, whereas there have been police raids on four-star and budget hotels — occasionally called in by staff who suspected illegal activity on their premises. If you plan to receive company in your room, choose your hotel accordingly.

Key-card elevators

Most five-star hotels require a room key to operate the elevator, which would mean collecting your visitor in the lobby — more attention than you may want. Nearly every hotel, however, has floors that are freely accessible without a key, such as the restaurant or bar level. Agree to meet there instead: someone waiting in front of a restaurant or bar looks perfectly casual.

Appearance

To draw even less attention, ask the girl to dress casually rather than provocatively. Experienced, higher-end escorts do this by default — they arrive dressed like a fashionable young woman visiting a friend — but not every girl has that street sense, so it costs nothing to mention it when booking. If you would like her in lingerie or a particular outfit, ask her to bring it along and change in your room.
