@rick: WhatsApp sporadically works in China; at least the messaging part. Audio/Video/Pictures never work.
Assuming you want to meet girls, sooner or later you'll be in China I assume. Since most of Chinese businesses and society assumes a person has WeChat, you should prioritize getting a WeChat account up and running.
If you want unrestricted WhatsApp access on your phone, you should prepare a VPN. Like Astrill.
